Fueling Freight Rates

The scramble to find trucks has heated up in recent weeks.  No secret there’s a shortage of drivers, but rising fuel costs are really driving the current run on freight rates.  One trucking company I talked with this morning explained that when they quote a rate and commit to hauling the load, there’s no telling what their actual fuel cost will be until the fuel bill arrives (every seven days).   Many trucking companies “don’t have the infrastructure” to handle this uncertainty, meaning hefty rates to hedge against rising costs.
